Finding the right life coach isn’t as simple as picking the trendiest one you see on Instagram. A great coach can help you make real changes, but the wrong one can waste your time and money.

A study by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) found that 82% of coaching clients saw major benefits—but only when they had the right coach for them. So, how do you make sure you find the perfect fit?

Here’s everything you need to know before hiring a life coach.

What to Look for in a Life Coach

1. A Proven Track Record

A coach’s results should speak for themselves. If they don’t have client testimonials, reviews, or success stories, that’s a red flag.

What to ask:
✔️ Do they have written or video testimonials?
✔️ Can they share real-life client success stories?
✔️ Do they have social proof (Google reviews, LinkedIn recommendations, etc.)?

2. A Coaching Style That Fits You

Every coach has a different style. Some are direct and no-nonsense, while others take a gentler, more supportive approach.

Think about what kind of guidance you need:
✔️ Do you respond well to tough love and accountability?
✔️ Do you prefer a coach who encourages and motivates gently?
✔️ Do you need a structured approach, or do you want flexibility?

The right coach will match your personality and needs.

3. A Clear Coaching Process (Not Just Talk)

A good coach won’t just motivate you with feel-good advice—they’ll have a structured process to help you take action.

Ask about their coaching framework:
✔️ How do they set goals with clients?
✔️ Do they provide tools, worksheets, or homework?
✔️ How do they track progress and hold clients accountable?

The best coaches provide actionable strategies, not just pep talks.

4. Experience and Training

Coaching isn’t a regulated industry, meaning anyone can call themselves a coach. That doesn’t mean they need a PhD, but they should have some form of training or real-world experience.

✔️ Do they have certifications from organizations like the ICF (International Coaching Federation)?
✔️ Have they been trained in coaching techniques, psychology, or personal development?
✔️ Do they have relevant experience in helping clients like you?

5. A No-Pressure Consultation

A good coach should offer a free discovery call so you can see if you’re a good fit. If they try to pressure you into signing up immediately without learning about your needs, that’s a huge red flag.

Use this consultation to:
✔️ Ask about their coaching style and process
✔️ Explain your goals and see if they align
✔️ See if their personality is a good match for you

If you feel comfortable and confident after the call, that’s a great sign. If you feel rushed or pressured, trust your gut and keep looking.
